Not to brag, but we have the

ο»Ώcoolest playground in Richmond.

But it’s not just a place to play.

Progressive and nature educators across the globe have been testing and touting the value of the outdoor classroom for the last two decades. For Sabot students, “working outside is not simply doing what we do inside, outside. It is a way to think differently, to use the affordances of the space, and to use nature as the pallet and the muse.”  (Melanie Nan, Sabot 4th Grade Teacher-Researcher).

While many schools boast an outdoor classroom, we are uniquely situated beside the 106-acre Larus Park--a wooded wonderland that is one of our most valuable teachers.  Each week, we see that the children and adults alike are revived, refreshed, and inspired by their return to natural surroundings with which they are intimately familiar. We have also observed that children initiate new relationships and undertake, with surprising intention and competence, responsible risks and physical challenges in this natural environment.

Sabot students spend time in nature regularly, rain or shine.

Larus Park – home to trails, streams, and a variety of flora and fauna - is touted as one of Richmond’s “best kept secrets” and is a treasure trove of inspiration for scientific inquiry and inspiration.

Classes spend time in the forest on a regular basis: exploring, making forts, playing pretend, and learning from nature. We are outside rain or shine and in all seasons - rain boots required. We believe that time spent in nature is crucial to child-development and fosters an innate sense of wonder and discovery, in addition to the socio-emotional learning that emerges during play: Team-work, resilience, problem-solving, just to name a few.
